11 Common SEO Mistakes That Hurt Your Rankings

The most common SEO mistakes are targeting keywords you cannot win, publishing thin content, ignoring technical SEO, and forgetting local SEO entirely. We know because we audit websites every week at Rank Craft, and the same eleven problems appear over and over, quietly costing businesses rankings, traffic and enquiries.

Here they are, with the fix for each. Count how many apply to your site, then fix them in order.

Mistakes 1 to 3: Keywords and Content

1. Chasing keywords you cannot win

Targeting head terms like "insurance" or "web design" against national brands wastes months. The fix is our keyword research process: long-tail terms with clear intent and realistic difficulty first, glory terms later.

2. Ignoring search intent

If Google shows guides for a query and you built a sales page, you will not rank no matter how good the page is. Match the page type to what the search results already show, then make yours better.

3. Thin and duplicate content

Ten near-identical location pages with swapped town names, or 200-word service pages, tell Google you have little to say. Every page needs a reason to exist. Consolidate the weak ones, expand the important ones, and let one strong page do the work of five thin ones. Keyword stuffing belongs in this bin too: repeating your target phrase in every sentence made sense in 2009 and reads as spam now, to users and to Google.

Mistakes 4 to 7: Technical SEO

4. Slow pages and poor mobile experience

Site speed and mobile usability are baseline expectations. Most searches happen on phones, and slow load times bleed visitors before your content gets a chance. Check your Core Web Vitals and fix what is red.

5. Crawl and index problems

Pages blocked by robots.txt by accident, noindex tags left over from development, broken links and redirect chains: none of it is visible to the eye and all of it stops rankings. Google Search Console reports most of these for free, and the Pages report is the first place any SEO audit looks.

6. Missing or duplicated title tags and meta descriptions

The title tag is still one of the clearest relevance signals Google has, and dozens of pages titled "Home" or sharing one identical title throw that signal away. Every page needs a unique, descriptive title and a meta description written to earn the click. Our guide to writing meta descriptions covers the pattern.

7. No structured data

Schema markup helps search engines and AI systems understand what your pages are, and it unlocks rich results your competitors may not have. It costs little to add and compounds quietly.

Mistakes 8 to 11: Strategy and Authority

8. Ignoring local SEO

If you serve a physical area and your Google Business Profile is unclaimed, incomplete or missing reviews, you are invisible in local search and the map pack, which is where local customers actually click. Neglecting local SEO is the most expensive mistake on this list for service businesses, and the fastest to fix with a proper local SEO effort.

9. Neglecting backlinks, or buying bad ones

Backlinks from credible sites remain a core ranking factor, and having none caps how far your content can climb. Buying cheap links is worse than having none: low-quality link schemes are the one mistake on this list that can earn a penalty rather than mere underperformance. Earn links with genuinely useful content and digital PR instead.

10. Weak internal linking

Orphan pages with no internal links pointing at them are invisible to visitors and nearly invisible to crawlers. Link related pages together with descriptive anchor text so authority flows to the pages that earn money.

11. Publishing once and never updating

Rankings decay. Competitors update, search intent drifts, and a page that ranked in 2023 slides quietly. Reviewing and refreshing your best pages once or twice a year protects the traffic you already earned, which is far cheaper than winning it back.

A Ten-Minute Self-Audit

You can spot most of these common seo mistakes yourself in one sitting. Search site:yourdomain.com on Google and scan the titles for duplicates. Click through your own site on a phone and time the slow pages. Open Search Console and check the Pages report for indexing errors and the Performance report for rankings that slipped. Click every link on your key pages to catch broken links, and check the anchor text of your internal links while you are there, because a link that says "click here" wastes a relevance signal that descriptive anchor text would earn. Ten minutes of honest checking beats a month of wondering why your search rankings are stuck.

Watch your organic traffic in the weeks after each fix. Improvement in visibility usually shows in impressions within weeks, and in seo performance overall within a couple of months. If a fix moves nothing, that tells you something too: the real problem sits elsewhere on this list, often in off-page seo or site structure rather than on the page itself.

Where to Start Fixing

Order matters. Fix crawl and index problems first, because nothing else counts while Google cannot see your pages properly. Then titles, speed and mobile. Then rebuild your keyword targeting around intent, and only then invest in new content and links. Most sites see visible movement within two to three months of working through that sequence.

If you would rather know exactly which of these eleven apply to you, an SEO audit from our team answers it with a prioritised list, and the audit conversation is free: get in touch here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you recover from bad SEO?

Yes, almost always. Fix the technical issues, remove or improve thin content, disavow genuinely toxic links if any exist, and rebuild pages around real search intent. Recovery usually takes two to six months depending on how deep the problems ran.

Does keyword stuffing still hurt rankings?

Yes. Repeating a keyword unnaturally makes pages read badly for users and is easy for Google to detect. Modern SEO rewards natural language that covers a topic thoroughly, not a phrase repeated forty times.

How do I find out which SEO mistakes my site is making?

Run an SEO audit. Google Search Console will surface indexing, mobile and Core Web Vitals problems for free, and a professional audit adds content, keyword and backlink analysis with a prioritised fix list.
